The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. is not only home to the current President of the United States, it also is home of severa American presidents who occasionally decide to make their presences known there, despite the fact that they are dead.
President Harrison is said to be heard rummaging around in the attic of the White House, looking for who knows what. President Andrew Jackson is thought to haunt his White House bedroom. And the ghost of First Lady Abigail Adams was seen floating through one of the White House hallways, as if carrying something.
The most frequently sighted presidential ghost has been that of Abraham Lincoln. Eleanor Roosevelt once stated she believed she felt the presence of Lincoln watching her as she worked in the Lincoln bedroom. Also during the Roosevelt administration, a young clerk claimed to have actually seen the ghost of Lincoln sitting on a bed pulling off his boots. On another occasion, while spending a night at the White House during the Roosevelt presidency, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands was awakened by a knock on the bedroom door. Answering it, she was confronted with the ghost of Abe Lincoln staring at her from the hallway. Calvin Coolidge's wife reported seeing on several occasions the ghost of Lincoln standing with his hands clasped behind his back, at a window in the Oval Office, staring out in deep contemplation toward the bloody battlefields across the Potomac.

The Tower of London

The Tower of London
London, England
From Stephen Wagner

The Tower of London, one of the most famous and well-preserved historical buildings in the world, may also be one of the most haunted. This is due, no doubt, to the scores of executions, murders and tortures that have taken place within its walls over the last 1,000 years. Dozens upon dozens of ghost sightings have been reported in and around the Tower. On one winter day in 1957 at 3 a.m., a guard was disturbed by something striking the top of his guardhouse. When he stepped outside to investigate, he saw a shapeless white figure on top of the tower. It was then realized that on that very same date, February 12, Lady Jane Grey was beheaded in 1554. Perhaps the most well-known ghostly resident of the Tower is the spirit of Ann Bolen, one of the wives of Henry VIII, who was also beheaded in the Tower in 1536. Her ghost has been spotted on many occasions, sometimes carrying her head, on Tower Green and in the Tower Chapel Royal.Well, the other ghosts which are spotted are of Henry VI, Thomas a Becket and Sir Walter Raleigh.

The Myrtles Plantation

Built in 1796 by General David Bradford, this stately old home is said to be haunted be several restless ghosts. Some researchers say as many as ten murders have been committed there, but others, such as Troy Taylor and David Wisehart, have only been able to confirm one murder at Myrtles. (Those two authors provide a very good history of the house in their article, The legends, the lores and the lies of the Myrtle Plantation).
Even they agree, however, that the place is seriously haunted and easily qualifies as one of the "most haunted." These are some of the ghosts that allegedly haunt the house:
>Cleo – a former slave who was allegedly hung on the premises for killing two little girls. (Those murders and even the existence of Cleo are in question.)
>The ghosts of the two murdered children have been seen playing on the veranda.
>William Drew Winter – an attorney who lived at Myrtles from 1860 to 1871. He was shot on the side porch of the house by a stranger. With his life's blood pouring from his body, Winter staggered into the house and began to climb the stairs to the second floor... but didn't make it. He collapsed and died on the 17th step. It is his last dying footsteps that can still be heard on the staircase to this day. (Winter's murder is the only one that has been verified.)
>The ghosts of other slaves allegedly occasionally show up to ask if they can do any chores.
>The grand piano has often been heard to play by itself, repeating one haunting chord.

Captures from Bhangarh Fort,India!

Screaming Tunnel

Wow!!..now this one truly sounds scary! It is said that if one stands in a tunnel in one of the woods and lights a wooden match in the middle of the tunnel (at midnight), they will hear a scream when it blows out. The scream is said to be of a little girl who was burned alive by her deranged father, who lost a legal battle over the girl. Also, some have reported seeing the ghost of the father, sometimes carrying a lantern. There is a rumor stating that the ghost will stalk people, and that whoever gets caught by it will die suddenly.

Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort is supposedly one of the most haunted places in India and, by government orders, staying after sunset is strictly prohibited in the area. Infact,it's even said that there is a board saying "staying after sunset is strictly prohibited "..According to the myth, the place was cursed by a tantrik that there will be such an incident that everybody in the palace would die and their souls will stay there for centuries without rebirth.

Ramoji Film City

Now,coming to India..there are a no. of spooky haunts in India aswell..Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad can be compared to the Universal Studios in North America. When you reach the hotels at this location, the area is said to be haunted. The reason? The studios have been built on top of war grounds of the Nizam sultans. Some of the odd things that occur throughout the studios include lights that fall from the top of the studios, where workers who have sat by the lights, have been pushed from their post by an unknown force, obtaining injuries. When food has been left in the rooms, it has been later discovered to be displaced about the area. Some have witnessed odd marks on the mirrors, including Urdu, which is associated with the language of the sultans. Females have reported the most disturbing encounters with the ghosts here; their clothes have been ripped from their bodies, as well as endure disturbing knocks on their locked bathroom doors.

Drury University

..Whoa!now, about the Drury Univ..,This old institution first opened its doors on September 25, 1873, with thirty-nine pupils in attendance. Beginning with a two-story brick structure at a cost of just $7,000 for classes, the campus occupied less than 1½ acres.

Next a frame building was built for the music department and in 1875 an elegant brick structure was opened called "Walter Fairbank's Hall" as a women’s boarding house. Twenty-five years later the 40-acre campus included Stone Chapel, the President’s House and three academic buildings. Today the 80-acre campus still includes the original site and much more, including a few phantom visitors according to its staff and students.
Old colleges often have many reports of hauntings, but this particular college has good reason as it was built upon a site which was once Indian burial grounds and later was in the midst of the Civil War. In 1966 Smith Hall, a women’s dormitory, was built in an area that used to be called home to several old Victorian houses. In one of these old vintage homes once lived a little girl who was caught in a fire when she wanted to retrieve her teddy bear. According to the stories, she continues to linger in the hall searching for her teddy bear. Many have witnessed the little girl, dressed in pink, and walking the halls. Others have reportedly taken pictures. A bit of a prankster, students have often returned to their rooms to find their locked doors standing wide open, drawers pulled out of dressers and a teddy bear sitting in the center of the room. Others report that if they have a teddy bear, it will often be moved during the night to appear at a different place in the room the next morning. One student tells a story of an unused telephone stored in a closet that would ring during the night with no source of power. At Clara Thompson Hall, many students have reported that pianos seemingly play by themselves and doors are said to often close on their own. At the Wilhoit Theatre, many people have reported seeing flickering lights at night when no one is in the theatre.Drury University is located at 900 North Benton Avenue at East Central Street.

Bass Country Inn

A ghost known as Carl, who was a former bus boy at this inn, is said to still haunt the premises. Staff have reported seeing him in the kitchen and in the halls. Others have reported seeing a pair of legs beneath a table, but when they crouch down, there is no one there. Carl has often been reported as having been seen just out of the corner of an eye disappearing into the office or down the hall, but upon closer inspection, no one is there. Carl is seemingly harmless, but others have reported another female spirit at the Inn, who isn’t very friendly. Both apparitions have been said to touch people. The Bass Country Inn is located off Highway 44 at North Glenstone Avenue.

Phelps Grove Park

On East Bennett Street, Phelps Grove Park encompasses some 44 acres that provide entertainment and beauty to area residents. It's also allegedly home to a wandering spirit. though the park is quite old, the spirit is relatively new, evidently killed in an automobile accident. It was the day of her wedding and as her and her new groom drove through the park, the automobile went out of control and they were both killed. The "Bride under the Bridge" has often been spied near the third bridge in the park in the evening. The forlorn bride is usually seen standing, holding up the hem of her gown, but where her face should be, there is only darkness.

Ghosts of Springfield

Ghosts of Springfield
By Troy Taylor

Then in August of 1979, Blasko attended his 20 year class reunion from Griffin High School. One of his classmates was the Reverend Gary Dilley, a priest from St. Mary’s Church in Fort Worth, Texas. He approached Dilley about the strange occurrences at the club and explained what was going on. The priest agreed to look the place over because he believed that Blasko was sincere and had never known him to be susceptible to hysterics.
Dilley admitted in a newspaper interview that his initial visit to the club was a disturbing one. "I could feel chilling drafts…I had the definite impression that someone was watching me. I also had the feeling that someone was trying to communicate with me," he reported.
Dilley then questioned several of the club’s employees and found that their stories were very similar and had not the time to compare notes before he talked to them. He was convinced that something out of the ordinary was going on, but he could not do an "exorcism" of the place. To take things that far would require a thorough investigation and the permission of the local bishop. He decided to bless the place and to pray there, hoping that would perhaps put Rudy at rest.
Dilley contacted two other priests to take part in the ceremony, Rev. John Corredato of St. Patrick’s parish in Kankakee and Rev. Gerald Leahy of Griffin High School. The three men were quick to point out that they were not trying to perform an exorcism at the club, they were simply blessing the place and trying to clear out any negative spirits. They also were hoping to put to rest what they called a "very restless soul."
The priests went from room to room, blessing the building with holy water and praying. They asked that any evil or negative spirits leave the building and then they prayed specifically for Rudy. They entered the room where Rudy had committed suicide and prayed that his soul be able to rest.
After the ceremony, Dilley assured everyone that Rudy was not an evil person. Many times, the prayers of a priest or holy person can put a restless spirit at east. "I definitely think we did some good there," Dilley said, "I didn’t feel the chill after our prayers…when I returned to Texas I said a mass for Rudy."
Was that the end of the restless ghost of Rudy?
Apparently it was, because the same people who had so fervently believed that his ghost was haunting the club, were just as sure that he had departed. The religious ceremony that took place that August evening was the last time that anyone was ever aware of Rudy’s presence in the club. Whether the prayers and blessings actually banished Rudy from the club or simply helped him along his way to other side is unclear.
Was Rudy the "evil spirit" that some frightened musicians and employees believed that he was? I doubt it, because as we discussed in the introduction to this book, rarely are ghosts anything but a negative influence. Certainly in the case of Rudy Cranor, he was a lost and restless soul who took his own life…it is very easy to believe that his spirit may not have made the transition to the next world. He chose to stay behind in the one place that he loved the best…the Lake Club.

The Haunted Leonis Adobe

Ghost Stalker’s Guide to Haunted California
By Richard Senate

The historic Leonis Adobe is a quiet place now; only the occasional muffled sound of traffic intrudes upon the silence. One can almost imagine what it must have been like to visit this prosperous ranch house a century ago. Imagination, though, cannot account for the many mysterious things that have happened at the old adobe over the years; so many things that today the place is believed by many to be one of the most haunted sites in Los Angeles County!
"Chiquita!" came the harsh whisper in the night, "Chiquita, Chiquita!" The watchman was sleeping on a cot on the second floor that night when he heard the mysterious voice. When he checked, there was no one there. He later learned that "Chiquita" is Spanish for "Little Girl," and it was the nickname of Espiritu Leonis, the wife of the builder of the adobe. Others say that, when they drive past the house late at night, they have seen the image of a lady in a long black dress standing on the balcony. When they check, there is no one there. The ghost that walks the thick walled home, now a museum, may well be the restless spirit of Espiritu.
She was a Native American who had inherited the Rancho El Escorpion upon the death of her husband. When she married Basque adventurer Miguel Leonis, he took control of the 1100 acre estate. He added to the ranch, growing rich and powerful. He was known as "El Basque Grandee" and, with his army of Mexicans and Indians, he controlled the area like a feudal baron
In 1889, Leonis died in an accident while returning home after winning a lawsuit. Espiritu continued to live in the house until her death in 1906. The house went through many hands until, in 1962, it was designated "Historic Cultural Monument No. 1" by the newly formed Cultural Heritage Board of the Municipal Art Department of the City of Los Angeles. It was at this time when the place was undergoing renovation, that the stories of ghosts and odd happenings first were told. Ghostly footsteps were heard on the stairway to the second floor and dark shadows hovered in the twilight. A psychic woman visiting the house several years ago had a curious encounter with the resident ghost. She was on the second floor when she heard a breathing sound beside her, "like a sigh." Then she felt a cold gust of wind race behind her, sending a ripple of shivers up her spine It was the same sort of feeling one might have if someone was passing very close to you running, but when she turned she was very much alone. She had not heard the stories of the ghosts at the old Calabasas Adobe, and it was years later that she learned that the site was indeed haunted.
Another visitor was also walking the grounds of the Leonis Adobe, when he heard voices like two men speaking Spanish on the second floor of the place. He could hear them plainly, but when he looked, there was no one on the balcony. He even went up to the second floor, using the one stairway. He saw no one come down and no one was present in the house. When he walked to the second floor he was quite alone! He was positive that it was the voice of a man he heard, and the Spanish he recognized as having an odd accent. He could make out only the words for "horse" and "sheep."
One volunteer is glad to have ghosts here, for she believes that the ghost may well have saved her life! She was leaning on the railing on the second floor when two powerful hands seized her by the shoulders and pulled her back, inside the house, just as the balcony collapsed! When she turned to thank her rescuer, she discovered that there was no one there!
Perhaps the oddest event to happen at the Leonis Adobe might be classified as "retrocognition," that is, seeing an event from the past. A young girl ran from the upstairs bedroom, screaming that she had seen a man in the master bedroom, a man with a black beard and covered with bloody bandages! He was moaning while he was lying on the bed. The group checked, and there was no one there. It was that room where the injured Miguel Leonis was brought after his accident, and it was here, bandaged and bloodied, that he passed out of this life.
"There is something here…" explains Wendy Peddicord, a guide at the adobe. "There are feelings here unlike any other place I’ve ever been to. One of the (staff) used to tell me that she felt totally drained after leaving the house." The sudden loss of energy is a factor that is found in stories of haunted houses throughout history.

..Wish Halloween was smthn we cud hav been able to celebrate in India..!

Since when have ppl believed in their existence..??

I myself hav nevr believed in their existence..truly,seems like a joke to me..but i'v heard dat people have believed in ghosts since the earliest times. Since d time of the Celts, on the night before October 31st (the Celtic new year), it was thought the edges between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred and the ghosts of the dead came back to earth. They celebrated this with a festival called Samhain (later to become Halloween).

..G H O S T S..

Ghosts are supposed to be apparitions. Some accept their existence while some deny..Some people think ghosts are spirits of the dead that stay on Earth. Others believe that when something violent happened long ago, it left behind an 'energy' that repeats the happening in a ghostly way, again and again. Others are sure that ghosts are just something people imagine seeing.
